Coat Of Arms Of The Republic Of Venice

Coat Of Arms Of The Republic Of Venice

Coat of Arms of the Most Serene Republic of Venice (697 – 1797). The Arms depicts; a shield depicting the Lion of Saint Mark (Winged Lion with a halo; Symbol of Saint Mark the Evangelist; patron Saint of Venice) standing across land and ocean, perhaps symbolizing Venetian military and naval power. The Lion holds in one hand a sword the other the Gospel of Saint Mark with the words: "Pax tibi Marce, Evangelista meus" or "peace to you, Mark my Evangelist". The shield is topped with the Ducal (Doge's) Crown of Venice. Behind the shield are golden ribbons.
